The tournament was held at USC, in a nearly empty auditorium. The organizers lost a lot of money from the event and put the tournament in danger of becoming extinct. I wrote about the aftermath of this tournament in a previous article.
Surprisingly, footage of the entire tournament exist. For years, most of the Classic Tetris community did not know the videos existed until someone found it on YouTube.
The format of this tournament was more straightforward. Basically, the qualifying round was played on Type B, Height 0. There was a 100,000 point bonus for playing on Level 19.
The Top 8 qualified for the main bracket were competitors faces each other 1 vs 1 in a Best of 3 format. Full rules can be found here.
