Blue Scuti became the first player to crash the game of NES Tetris on December 21, 2023. It eventually made news headlines worldwide on January 3, 2024. The publicity happened thanks in part to aGameScout’s YouTube video. Which quickly became viral, gaining one million views in 3 days.
The achievement caught the attention of Legendary Entertainment, one of the media companies that developed “A Minecraft Movie”.
In early December 2023, Legendary Entertainment revealed that they were launching their non-scripted division. Part of the company’s expansion to making documentaries and docuseries. This division would be led by Executive Vice President, Michael Bloom.
Legendary Entertainment saw Blue Scuti’s achievement and took the opportunity to put their non-scripted division to work in developing their debut documentary, “Blue Scuti: Game Crasher”. They got in touch with Blue Scuti and his family in mid-January 2024, not too long after the media frenzy.
This documentary would be directed by Chris Moukarbel, who had previously worked on “Gaga: Five Foot Two”. It made sense to have him work on another documentary that centered around a famous person.
Filming Locations
They started filming in mid-March. Around that time, Blue Scuti would compete at the 2024 CTWC Phoenix Regional. So the crew documented his appearance at that tournament.
Later on, they wanted more content so they sent Blue Scuti to France to compete at the 2024 CTWC France Regional.
The crew had documented Blue Scuti’s journey leading up to the 2024 Classic Tetris World Championship (CTWC) which was happening in Pasadena, California.
I was at 2024 CTWC, where I got to see the documentary crew in action as they filmed Blue Scuti’s match, along with his family’s reaction. It was intimidating seeing the camera crew filming the audience, even if I was not in the front row.
Knowing how Blue Scuti did at the 2024 CTWC, It will be interesting to see how they decide to tell his story along with the other players that will be featured in the documentary.
